Is evoking the phrase "Manchurian Candidate" really a good idea in a time of suggestible gun nuts?

The Manchurian Candidate was a fictional presidential assassin, if you remember.

It only makes sense to believe the opinions of foreign newspapers when they are completely in line with your point of view.

The allusion, as it keeps coming up in rabid right wing chatter, is a thinly veiled hope that someone will in fact assassinate Obama. It shouldn't be thrown around with gleeful abandon.

At the risk of mixing metaphors, sometimes it is necessary to call a spade a spade.

People who call Obama a muslim, an illegitimate candidate and a Manchurian candidate are participating in the placing of a target sign on him. It is made even worse by people who segue from the notion that he is an illegitimate president to the urgency to buy guns before he takes them away from the citizenry are reinforcing a dangerous notion that there is an urgent need for guns. Why the sudden urgency? Our new illegitimate black Muslim president? The Al Quaeda cell on Pennsylvania Ave? Puhlease!!!!

When you are dealing with mass communication and large audiences, reckless speech has real world consequences. Admittedly, blogggers on NewsVine have small audiences and can't do as much damage as someone like Glenn Beck, but even small voices matter today as the collective chatter ads up.

If you don't like how Obama is governing, well join the club. But lets keep it to the issues and not wander off the reservation into deus ex machina fantasies of snipers.

Yes President Obama ran on a platform of change and he has lived up to his campaign promises to an astounding degree in spite of the financial and world peace mess left to him by the previous administration. Its unfortunate that such a talented, intelligent and articulate man now has to fix the disasters of the country's worst presidency, GWB. But it is a damn good thing we have him in charge. Imagine for a minute that McCain and Palin were elected. That thought ought to send shivers up the spine of any thinking person.

Well Obama has certainly pushed change. But was the change what anyone really expected? In fact he has pushed it to the destruction of anything else. He might have been able to sell some of this stuff if packaged the right way but this guy is about as subtle as a sledge hammer in church. His personal political agenda is more important to him than, a recovery of the economy, jobs for people out of work, reelection of the Democrats in congress or his own reelection which I seriously doubt will occur at this point. So what drives a many like this to do things so destructive to his country, his political party and to himself?????

It can only be his own insanity or having a real plan that is not shared with the people or the fawning press that has carried him to this point because it just makes no sense. Could it be that the person who delived to him 200 Million Dollars from overseas during the election may have a private agenda that he/she is insisting of having implemented? Could Be.

I agree Andnow. I was going to type exactly what you already have. On another blog I had questioned who is really running the country since Biden seems to be addressing the issues, that, IMO should be addressed by the President. However, when it's a celebrity moment with no pressure, Obama is right in front of the camera. I guess he's not ready to take ownership for some of the "misreadings" they've encountered. Too much knee-jerk decision making. However, on the other hand, maybe just trying to make too many changes too fast. So, before anyone bashes me for not bashing GWB, I've done that already on other blogs. He doesn't get any passes either.

JFK wasn't President but for 2 years. do you think it would be fair for him to be carved in granite. If the government goes into debt, we hear the complaint that they are putting the "debt" on the taxpayers and taxpayers (and their children and grandchildren) will have to pay it....bad, bad thing, right? So if the government makes a profit, then that reduces the taxpayers' debt, reduces the debt of our children and grandchildren, so that's a good, good thing right?

So in response to your ?question?...yes, a health insurance company making record profits off the life and death decisions of ordinary Americans enrages me, but the taxpayers (and their children and grandchildren) making a profit off an efficient and cost-cutting health program and reducing the country's debt in the process gives me no problems.
